Foster Needed for Tulip and Her 9 Young Blossoms

UPDATE: Tulip and her Pups Found Their Foster

Attention open hearts and open homes!
This is Tulip.
Tulip was brought to us by a samaritan roughly two weeks ago on a cloudy Monday as a very pregnant stray. Her ultrasound revealed her due date was fast approaching within a couple weeks and it was estimated her litter consisted of 4 or 5 puppies.

Attempts were made to find Tulip a foster parent prior to her due date; however, in the care of our awesome clinic staff, Tulip gave birth to 9 healthy puppies--it was a bit of an underestimation on our part!

Tulip is a friendly 2 1/2-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix who rarely wants to be without company. Motherhood suits her--perhaps TOO well.

Yes, these are MY  precious jelly beans.
Tulip takes her role as "mom" very seriously! Although she temporarily lived with a small dog and 2 cats prior to her time at the shelter, motherhood has (of course!) made her protective of her young sprouts. Because of this, we are seeking a foster family without small children or animals who are experienced with nursing moms and newborns pups.

We're hoping Tulip can rest and her puppies can grow and be weaned in a relaxing, warm, and caring environment! She deserves it.

As with all our foster pets, all supplies needed to care for Tulip and her puppies will be provided free of charge!

Those interested in fostering Tulip and her 9 pups, please e-mail foster@sahumane.org

We love our foster parents!

And almost anybody can foster our needy pets. All you need is an open heart, an open home, and to be ready and willing to care for pets in need.

Pets who need foster families include those who may be too young to be adopted, such as orphaned newborns, sick or injured pets, pets who need more socialization, or nursing dogs/cats.

5 Reasons You Won't Want Your Child to Miss Spring Camp Humane 2016

The registration deadline for this year's Spring Camp Humane is less than a month away! Do you know what your child could be doing this upcoming Spring Break? (March 14-18)

1. Keeping Their Heads Full
It's a common "out-of-school" malady: what goes in comes right back out! When kids are out of school, it usually means their emptying their heads of some of that hard-earned education.

We're gonna fill them up with cute, fluffy, and wild things.
Spring Camp Humane is a fun way to keep your child's head full as they actively participate in an education about animal welfare and humane living.

2. Painting, and Socks, and Catnip—Oh My!
Remember the best part of school—besides nap time?
Nap time is the best part of any time.
Arts and crafts. Breaking out the glitter, the glue, and the lemon-scented markers and learning by creating. Kids will help make toys for our precious pets and participate in demonstrational dioramas that will teach them the significance of environmental impact.

3. Seeing Exciting Presentations from our On-Staff Trainer, Veterinarian, and outside organizations such as Sea World and Zoomagination
Participating presenters will offer professional and hands-on presentations: Kids will witness the talents, abilities, and potential of well-trained dogs, see the majesty of wild and exotic animals such as horses and reptiles, and learn about the attention and skills necessary to care for them. Sometimes, the best way to learn is hands-on!

4. Turning Pages with Pets
One of the best ways to learn to speak and read well is by doing it out loud, and kids will have the opportunity to do just that as they turn pages with our pets. Sometimes, the best way to unwind after a day of running agility courses with the pooches is by sitting down with a good book. Reading time out-loud also helps pet socialization, increasing the chance our pets will be adopted into a forever home!
Potential Reading Buddies

5. Scavenging the Shelter and Learning about Careers
It’s never too early to think about the future! Part of our Spring Camp Scavenger Hunt will involve children learning about the awesome people who dedicate their professional lives to the needy shelter pets of the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS). This includes those people who educate the public and those who medically treat and train our shelter pets.
We've got a lot of helping hands ensuring the happiness of our pets.

So, let your child spend a week with and learning about animals!

Our camps fill up fast, and the next opportunity to participate in the SAHS’s Camp Humane won’t be till the Summer time

(Though with San Antonio weather, that’s only ever a few degrees away.)

Time to Get Royal - Fiesta® El Rey Fido 2016

It’s sort of an unofficial mantra amongst pet owners that our four-legged friends are often much more well cared for than us. They get the types of luxuries we can only dream about: free shelter, free food, unlimited napping time. . .

Carry on.

In our eyes, our pets should be treated like royalty—and the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) agrees!

An official Fiesta® event, the El Rey Fido fundraising competition is every dog-owner’s chance to prove the magnificence and majesty of their pooches, while also benefiting their local pet community—not to mention the chance to participate in another glorious and festive Fiesta event!

I am Fiesta.

Unfortunately, our feline overlords are not able to participate in this event. Something about being in the company of strangers really taxes on kitty's nerves.

I don't need a crown to prove I'm royalty.

The dog owner and canine pair who are able to raise the most funds will be crowned and celebrated at a coronation event in April. Four runner-up pairs will be awarded separate titles and serve on the El Rey Fido court. The perks of being conferred these royal titles includes serving as ambassadors for the SAHS during their reigning year, participation in various media events and appearances, and the chance to don some swanky royal gear.
I woke up like this.

Getting started is simple: contestants can create and keep track of their donations on their FirstGiving fundraising page. Donations can also be made in-person at the SAHS in a contestant’s name.

Contestants can use many creative means to raise funds: create a Facebook page, start a bake sale, make shirts and badges, even soliciting the help of friends and family who are already fans of your precious pooch is advantageous.

The deadline for the competition is March 10. Funds raised by this fundraising competition benefit all the homeless pets at the San Antonio Humane Society. Please visit SAhumane.org/ERF for more info! Viva Fiesta!

From Micro to Macro: Our move to Blogger

It may come as a shock to some, but not all blogging sites are created equal. After much thought and many sleepless nights, we've decided to make the jump from Tumblr to Blogger. There are a number of reasons for the change, but the main difference is content: we're a heavily text-based blog. We're here to share stories, events, profiles, etc. and we hope to share this information in order to engage our audience a little bit more with each post. This wasn't entirely possible with Tumblr.

Tumblr is a micro blogging site... where you're more likely to find this:

Meme Central

Which is all well and good, but it offers us the opportunity to share very little content about what we're doing here at the San Antonio Humane Society. We also love to receive feedback from our readers, which was also very difficult to achieve from Tumblr (as it required users to sign up in order to comment or subscribe). So, long story short, here we are!

All previous (Tumblr) blog posts have been (painstakingly) transferred over by the new Communication Associate (me). There was so much copying and pasting, Blogger started to think I was a robot.

Anyways, here's an awesome pic of Zahara for the road ahead.
