Three easy DIY toys to play with your pets at home

I think we can all agree that our pets are thrilled to have us home with them 24/7. With so much extra time available, our quarantine buddies also need extra love and attention to keep them healthy and happy during these uncertain times.

Keeping them entertained with enrichment toys and games not only provides them with stimulation and fun but also helps them release tension and pent up energy.

Below are three quick and easy DIY toys you can create at home using a paper towel or toilet paper rolls that we’re sure your pets will love, recommended by SAHS Animal Behavior Evaluator/Trainer Daniela Vasquez.

Cardboard tube toy. Grab a paper towel roll and fold one end so that it becomes closed. Fill it with your pet’s favorite treats and close the other end. Now, watch and enjoy seeing your furry friend play and try to get the treats out.

Cardboard ball. Using scissors, cut a toilet paper roll into at least five rings and insert them into each other until it creates a ball. Yes, it’s that easy. To make the toy irresistible, you can fill it up with treats or catnip inside.

Cardboard fringe toy. Grab a toilet paper roll and cut the ends into scrips using scissors until you get a fringe effect. For your dog, you can either insert a ball and have them fetch it or chase it. For your cat, you can also pierce the body of the tube and tie a string or ribbon to it and let your cat “hunt.”

These are just a few simple ideas to encourage hours of play with your furry best friends. We hope to spark your creativity and inspire you to create new toys using items you already have at home. With multiple toilet paper rolls, the possibilities are endless!
