Everyday Should be World Spay Day

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we forgot to mention World Spay Day in February.

But here's the thing: here at the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS), every day is a spay day! Or--more accurately-- every day is a spay/neuter day.

In 2018, the SAHS conducted nearly 20,000 spay/neuter surgeries on shelter, community, and owned pets. About 83% of those pets were publicly-owned or community-owned (e.g. feral cats). This means, most spay/neuter surgeries conducted by the SAHS are conducted on pets that are either already owned or are pets who live without owners. 

That's a lot of un-neutered pets!

You can say that again!

There are a lot of myths that surround spay/neuter surgeries. Many people we meet admit that they feel their pet should have one litter before receiving the surgery. Others claim they're afraid their pet's personality or activity level will change.

It's our mission to continue debunking those myths:

The fact of the matter is, the only "benefit" to NOT spaying/neutering your pet are kittens and puppies.

We're not here to deny the cuteness factor.

But even today, our community continues to suffer from pet overpopulation. With estimates ranging between 100k-200k stray pets in our community, there is simply not enough homes for the number of homeless pets born into our community. 

Take the wonderfully cute jelly-bean puppy pictured above. This puppy was born without a guaranteed home. Without our intervention, he would have grown alone on the streets, vulnerable to disease, wild animals, and vehicle accidents. 

It happens more often than you think.

The San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) offers many low-cost and FREE opportunities to spay/neuter dogs and cats.

This procedure reduces the risk of certain cancers and infections, prevents your pet from roaming (in search of a mate), can potentially stop other unwanted behaviors such as marking, mounting, digging, and DOES NOT make them lazy couch potatoes. 

But most of all, spaying/neuter your pet will help ensure that every pet born has a home. Help us continue to improve the lives of dogs and cats in our community!

• Transport a Pet to their Spay/Neuter Appointment
• We offer our spay/neuter services at the SAHS and at the Brooks Spay/Neuter Clinic. All surgeries are by appointment. Know someone who wants to spay/neuter their pet, but doesn't have the transportation to do so? Offer to be their transporter! We even offer transport days from local parks for those who do not live near our facilities. 
  
  
• Take Advantage of Our FREE Surgery Opportunities
• Although zip code grants can be limited, we offer many opportunities throughout the year for eligible residents to receive FREE spay/neuter surgeries if they are zip-code eligible. 
  
  
•  Share Our Spay/Neuter Services and the Benefits of Spaying/Neutering Your Pet
• We offer low-cost spay/neuter services year-round, and while our educators do their best to promote pet responsibility (again, year-round) to our community's kids, teens, and young adults, YOU can also be a voice for the voiceless and promote our mission! 
  
  
• Give During this Year's Big Give
• Did you know that it costs the SAHS approximately $70 to provide a spay/neuter surgery for each adoptable pet in our care? In 2018, over 3,000 dogs and cats were spayed/neutered by the SAHS before being adopted into their forever homes. That's a cost of over $210,000! The Big Give is happening Thursday, March 28. For every $70 donated to the SAHS, one pet in need can receive this vital surgery, which helps keep more needy and homeless pets off our streets. Make your contribution here on the BIG day!
