Puppy who survived life-threatening illness is ready for adoption

Saul, a brave 6-month-old Retriever pup, is finally ready to find his forever home after successfully recovering from distemper at the SanAntonio Humane Society (SAHS).

To celebrate his paw-some recovery, the SAHS clinic staff surprised Saul with a fun party filled with balloons, toys, treats and a delicious peanut butter and milk-bone cake on June 24.

Saul’s story is one example of the endless teamwork it takes to help an animal in need.

“The clinic team has been Saul's sole caregivers and playmates while he has been in the infirmary. Once Saul recovered from his illness and was waiting on a negative test result, it became clear that he needed daily enrichment and training to supplement him during his quarantine period,” Dr. Leslie Hopes, associate veterinarian at the SAHS, said. “The clinic team's devotion to providing Saul with splash time in his puppy pool and teaching him basic training - all while maintaining strict personal protective equipment - has been incredible.”

Though struggling with the illness, the puppy was as sweet as could be and all he wanted was attention from all staff members. During his recovery, he enjoyed some playtime outside and learned many commands such as “sit,” “shake,” and “lay down.”

Finally, after four months of receiving specialized and life-saving care at the SAHS, Saul tested negative for shedding the virus and is ready to go home to a loving family. The SAHS clinic staff believes he would make a great addition to any family. Please help us find this sweet boy his home by sharing his story!
