We’re
excited that November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month because we love our senior
pets here at the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS). They usually tend to spend
the longest amount of time with us and can sometimes be overlooked. We truly
believe age is just a number and that all senior pets are just as lovable and
fun as a new puppy or kitten.
In
honor of this PAW-some month, we want to make sure you know some of the
benefits of adopting a senior pet.
· - Most
of them are house-trained and require less training. Your furniture, shoes and
plants will thank you.
· - Senior
pets tend to be calmer. They are more relaxed, and most of them will be content
by taking a short walk or just spending quality time on the couch.
· - They
will be eternally grateful. They know you are giving them another chance, and
in return, they will love you unconditionally.
If
you’re thinking about adding a new furry friend to your family, we encourage
you to open your home to an older dog or cat. They will love you FUR-ever! Here
are some of our senior pets still searching for their forever homes:
Senior
gals Candy, 10 years old, and Sam, 11 years old, are best friends! These two Shepherd
mix beauties arrived at the SAHS together after their previous owner could no
longer care for them. As two senior pets, they never leave each other's side
and have a special bond. They hope to find a loving home where they can continue
their adventures together. Candy has a happy personality and loves to smile
with her tongue hanging out. Sam is the more curious one and loves to explore.
Due to her arthritis, Sam has received laser therapy on her back legs and is
being more active and playful. Her marking kicks are adorable!
The
sweet 7-year-old Shepherd mix is Shera! It only takes one look into her eyes
for you to fall in love with her. She is a smart girl and loves to give you her
paw. She also knows how to sit and has great leash manners. She will sit right
next to you when she wants attention. She is a big girl with an even bigger
heart!
If
you’re looking to have a constant companion, meet our 7-year-old beautiful
tripod Melina! She is a Retriever, Labrador mix with a gorgeous chocolate brown
coat, cute floppy ears and gorgeous smile! She would love to be the only
fur-baby in the household. She loves to
smell everything and thrives on affection and praise. Once she’s relaxed, she’ll
ask for all the belly scratches! Melina is also Heartworm positive and will
need to continue her treatment in her new home.
