Eight-year-old Lucky is finally ready to find his forever home after recovering from a terrible accident.
This adorable miniature poodle mix got his special name because he is lucky to be alive. It was last New Year’s Eve when Lucky was rushed to the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) by a Good Samaritan, who witnessed him get hit by a car and left to die.
Upon arrival, the SAHS clinic team quickly determined that Lucky had an injury to his hind leg and would need surgery and physical therapy to fully recover. After his surgery, Lucky was sent to a loving foster family, where he was taken on long, slow walks and received all the extra attention he needed to help his leg heal.
After nearly two months of undergoing weekly splint changes, multiple veterinary check-ups and countless hours of physical therapy, it was determined that Lucky’s leg was not healing in its current state. A second surgery was recommended at the end of February to install hardware onto his leg to help correct the injury and avoid having his leg amputated. Luckily, that did not happen. Once again, Lucky showed how strong he truly is.
“When his leg was finally beginning to heal, it was the best feeling ever,” said Michelle Linsley, his foster parent. “After everything he went through, we really didn’t want his leg to be amputated. He is such a sweet, gentle dog, and watching him get stronger every day was definitely the best part of his healing process.”
Lucky successfully completed two more months of his physical therapy in foster care. He is now a healthy, strong and happy dog. The entire SAHS staff hopes he finds his forever home soon.
“Lucky has been the most amazing patient ever,” said Daniel Taylor, SAHS foster coordinator assistant. “He has always been relaxed and was just a joy to treat. No matter how long it took for us to wrap his leg or take his X-rays, he would just power through it like the true good boy he is.”
Now back at the shelter, Lucky has proven to get along with other dogs. He loves nothing more than to cuddle and get back rubs. All he needs now is someone to open their heart and give him the loving home he deserves.
