After four months of medical attention and loving care, Chauncey is finally ready to find his forever family.
The 4-year-old adorable Terrier mix was severely malnourished and neglected when he was transferred from Animal Care Services to the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) in March. He was extremely underweight as his back and ribs were all clearly visible. He only weighed 12.4 pounds! His sweet eyes desperately asked for a second chance.
Chauncey began his journey to recovery in a wonderful foster home. As part of his treatment, he was fed four small meals a day using a slow feeder bowl to prevent him from eating too fast, which could cause complications due to his fragile state. His diet consisted of wet and dry puppy food to help him stay hydrated and increase in weight at a steady pace. His foster family made sure he received all the unconditional love he desperately needed.
With each passing day, Chauncey became stronger and stronger. In just a few weeks, his health began to improve as he slowly gained weight. His personality also began to change. He went from being shy and quiet to becoming a more loving and outgoing dog. He was smiling and playing again!
“With a little extra love and care, pets like Chauncey have a fighting chance,” his foster mom said. “When I look at him, I don’t see sadness anymore. I see independence, bravery and just the look of happiness and relief.”
Chauncey is now back at the shelter, healthy and happy as can be. He has now reached his healthy weight and loves to be around people. He loves to play fetch, knows how to sit and walk well on a leash, and is ready to give his new family plenty of kisses!
“He is a very sweet and kind dog,” SAHS Foster Coordinator Assistant Daniel Taylor said. “He seems to accept all people and loves to receive attention from anyone he can. He is a very happy dog.”
The SAHS is now looking for a loving home that can continue to give him all the love and attention he deserves. Please help us find this sweet boy his home by sharing his story!
